There was keen anticipation today as motorists and representatives of the automobile industry gathered for the launch of Shell’s revolutionary motor oil formulation – the fully synthetic Helix Ultra range of premium lubricants made from natural gas with patented Shell PurePlus Technology.

This historic launch entitled: “Drive the Future” was held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre and to celebrate the occasion Shell, technical partner of Scuderia Ferrari, displayed an impressive Scuderia Ferrari F1 showcar, much to the delight of guests.

Shell Helix Ultra with PurePlus Technology is the company’s most technologically advanced lubricant to date and the first motor oil designed from natural gas. It was unveiled today by SOL (BARBADOS) LTD., the official Macro Distributor for Shell Lubricants and welcomed by an audience of resellers, car dealerships, and special guests.

General Manager of Sol Barbados, Ezra Prescod, said Sol Barbados was pleased to deliver on its promise to keep Barbados on the cutting edge of advances in high-performance lubricant technology.

“The new Helix Ultra with Pureplus Technology will give motorists in Barbados access to Shell’s latest and most advanced motor oil designed to deliver an exciting range of key benefits which meet the needs of modern engines.”

Guests at the launch were assisted by Sol and Shell’s technical specialists and took full advantage of the opportunity to explore and learn more about the new range of Helix Ultra products.

The public was also invited to see more of the Scuderia Ferrari Showcar and enjoy promotional giveaways, photo opportunities, and a chance for special Ferrari prizes at three showcase events following the official launch. These will be held Thursday June 18th at the North Showroom, at Simpson Motors from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m.; at Sol Top Rock on Friday June 19th from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.; and on Saturday June 20th at Sol Warrens from 2:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

“Sol’s longstanding partnership with Shell continues to be to the benefit of our customers, and we are proud of our continued association with the world’s leading supplier of high quality motor oils. It is in keeping with this tradition that we will continue to support our customers by ensuring that they can always make informed choices of the best lubricants available,” Prescod stated.

The new Shell Helix Ultra synthetic line of premium motor oils introduces an entirely new way of producing synthetic base oils from natural gas with the patented Shell PurePlus Technology, a leading-edge gas-to-liquid technology process that converts natural gas into a crystal-clear base oil with virtually none of the impurities found in crude oil.

Jonathan Briceño, Shell Lubricants Cluster Marketing Manager for Latin America said this enables Shell to develop superior lubricants, and constitutes a significant step-change in the composition of Shell Helix Ultra motor oils since base oil typically makes up approximately 75 to 90 percent of a motor oil.

“This launch marks the culmination of 40 years of research in gas-to-liquid technology at Shell lubricants technology centres worldwide. Shell PurePlus Technology is paving the way for the next generation of motor oils by offering possibilities for new viscosity grades that can provide engine protection in more extreme conditions. This is a big moment for our brand and we want to shout about this milestone to excite and delight our customers,” Briceño said.

Shell PurePlus Technology also works in combination with Active Cleansing Technology to produce a premium lubricant which under tests demonstrated the highest attainable levels of cleansing and protection, keeping engines closer to factory clean than any other available option.  In addition to providing superior protection against the build-up of engine deposits and sludge, Shell PurePlus Technology has also been shown to contribute positively to fuel savings.

Shell Helix motor oils are distributed in Barbados by SOL (BARBADOS) LTD. Sol uses the Shell brand under license across its regional Shell Service Station network and is the Macro Distributor of Shell's fuels and lubricants, which are fully backed by Shell's world-class technical expertise.
